Frequently asked questions
GIF is an old format with limited compression. A short MP4 clip can become much larger as a GIF, especially at high frame rates or large dimensions. Reduce the width to 480 px or less, trim the duration to under 5 seconds, or lower frame rate to 10 FPS to keep the output manageable.
Use GIF when you need maximum compatibility for chat apps, older platforms, or places that still treat video badly. For websites and product docs, animated WebP or MP4 is usually smaller and better. GIF is also the only format many GitHub README files animate correctly.
Animated WebP is typically 25–35% smaller than GIF at equivalent quality and supports full color (not just 256 colors). Use WebP for websites and product docs. Use GIF for Slack, GitHub, old email clients, or any platform that does not yet support WebP.

GIF supports only 256 colors — footage with gradients, skin tones, or complex backgrounds will show visible banding or dithering. Long clips at high frame rates produce huge files that may crash the browser tab. Keep clips under 10 seconds and set width to 480 px or less for reliable results.
